There has been many a time when I have been likened to a spaniel.
Not because I run around in circles chasing my tail (although sometimes I do feel like that) but because my mind can be so scatty, jumping from one thing to the next.
This means unless I am careful, I can spend a hell of a lot of time doing the things that I don’t need to be doing.
I can waste hours looking up holidays, doing the washing, cleaning the house, checking my social media, etc. etc. when really I should be planning my next event, getting my accounts in order, promoting my business.
Procrastination happens to the best of us but what is it that really stops us from doing what we know we want be doing? Fear. Fear of starting, fear of failing, fear of how hard that activity is going to be.
But have you ever noticed that when you actually start something, it is never as bad as you had pictured it in your mind?
That 5 mile run never actually kills you, signing up to that course you’ve always wanted to do actually is really good fun when you get there, standing up and presenting your new business idea in front of a packed audience actually is quite liberating!
Once we get over the initial hurdle of starting the activity, it is never as bad as our minds have catastrophised it to be.
So, what if you are procrastinating with your life? What if you are procrastinating doing the small things and putting off the bigger things. You know, the things that you always say you will do but actually don’t take any action on.
Are you not acting on them because you don’t truly want them or are you scared of starting?
We all dream of what we would do if we won the lottery, if we had more time, more experience, etc. so we dream about what could be whilst we procrastinate with what we are just doing for now.
The job that we hate, the boss that we put up with, the stress that we live with.
But procrastination leads to more stress as life ticks on by and all those wonderful things you had on your Dream To Do List just don’t get done.
So what would happen if you stopped procrastinating for a day? What would that day be like if you did the thing that you know you want to do but are too scared to?
Just maybe you too would realise that when you start, it’s actually quite exhilarating. The fear that was there ebbs away and you are left feeling on top of your world for starting on that path you know you want to go down.
So why not make a promise to yourself that today you will do that one thing that you have been putting off for ages.
The one thing that will take you one step closer to your dream life. I can promise you, it will bring a smile to your face.
And how do I know? Because I had been procrastinating over writing this blog!
